Gaming questions are about an industry larger than film and recorded music combined, which is the first thing most people get wrong. The commercial scale and the cultural standing of this medium have been badly out of step for over a decade, and estimating from prestige rather than from revenue lands far short.

The structural pattern across this category is concentration. A tiny fraction of games earn almost everything, a tiny fraction of players spend almost everything, and a tiny fraction of creators reach almost everyone. Free distribution produces enormous supply and the median release, store or stream reaches nobody at all.

For sales and player figures, the reliable route is install base times attach rate, or users times spend. Both inputs are usually knowable, and the product is far more accurate than trying to recall a headline number. Watch for the difference between shipped and sold, registered and active, and cumulative and current.
