How many Nintendo Switch consoles have been sold, not counting the Switch 2?

Gaming medium Data from 2026

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In consoles. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

156,590,000 consoles

Roughly 156.6M.

The Switch has sold about 156.6 million units. At the end of 2025 it overtook the Nintendo DS to become Nintendo's best-selling console ever, and only the PlayStation 2 has sold more. It launched in 2017 with underpowered hardware and won anyway, which is roughly the whole Nintendo strategy in one sentence.

How to get close to this number

Anchor on the best-selling consoles ever. Only a handful of machines have ever reached the very top of the all-time list, and they sit in a narrow band close to one another. A console that has just overtaken one of those record holders and trails only one other has to sit right inside that band, which brackets the answer tightly once you know roughly where the top tier lies.

The observation in the explanation is the strategically interesting one: it launched with hardware substantially weaker than its competitors and outsold them anyway. Console generations are decided by what the machine lets you do rather than by specification, and a hybrid that works as both a living-room and a portable console answered a question the specification sheet does not ask.

Note that these are shipment figures reported by the manufacturer, covering units sent to retail rather than units in players' hands, and they include several hardware revisions sold under the same name — but not the successor console, which is counted separately. Console sales comparisons across eras are also complicated by market size: the total number of people who buy game consoles has grown substantially since the earlier record holders.
