Music

Music questions sit at the intersection of art and accounting, and most of the numbers here are the accounting half. Chart records, sales certifications, streaming rates and royalty splits are all defined by rules that have been rewritten repeatedly, so a record from one era is rarely comparable to one from another.

The structural shift underlying this whole category is streaming. It changed how charts count, how long songs stay on them, what a certification means, where industry revenue comes from, and how much of it reaches a performer. Several questions here are only interesting because the same metric now measures something different.

For instruments, the reliable route is reconstruction rather than recall. String counts, key counts and valve counts all follow from how the instrument produces pitch, and rebuilding the answer from the mechanism is faster and more accurate than remembering a specification.
