The answer

3 valves

A standard trumpet has 3 valves, and pressing different combinations of them changes the length of tubing the air travels through, which is how the instrument produces its full range of notes. Some professional trumpets add a 4th valve for extended low-range playing, but 3 is the standard for virtually every student and orchestral instrument.

How to get close to this number

Reason from combinations. Three valves give eight combinations including none pressed, which is enough to fill in the gaps between the natural harmonics a brass tube produces. Fewer would leave holes in the scale; more would be redundant for the standard range.

The mechanism in the explanation is the key insight: each valve adds a length of tubing, lowering the pitch by a fixed interval. A brass instrument without valves can only play the harmonic series of one tube length — which is why bugles play so few notes — and valves let a player switch between several tube lengths instantly.

The fourth valve on some professional instruments extends the low range and corrects intonation in the lowest register, where three-valve combinations drift sharp. So the standard count is the minimum that works rather than the ideal, and the extra valve fixes a known compromise rather than adding a feature.
