That gives tens of thousands of plays annually — but the question asks for distinct tracks, and repeats collapse that into a much smaller number.

The concentration in the explanation is the genuinely interesting finding: about forty percent of a typical user's streams come from around twenty songs. Listening is enormously repetitive, and the number of distinct tracks a person hears is a small fraction of the number of times they press play. Novelty is rarer in music consumption than anyone reports feeling.

That has a commercial consequence worth noticing. If most listening is repeat plays of a small personal core, then getting into that core is worth far more than being discovered once — which is why playlist placement and habit formation matter more to streaming revenue than a single viral moment does.
