How many copies has Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold?

How to get close to this number

Work from the console. The platform has sold roughly 156.6 million units, and the explanation gives the attach rate: copies equal to more than four in ten of those consoles. Multiplying an install base by an attach rate is the standard method for any platform-exclusive sales question, and it beats guessing the total directly.

An attach rate that high is the genuinely remarkable part, not the unit count. Most titles reach a small percentage of a console's owners; reaching nearly half means the game functions less like a product and more like a feature of the hardware. Only a handful of games in history have managed it, and they are almost all party or pack-in titles.

The longevity matters too. This is an enhanced re-release of a game from the previous console generation, which meant it launched early in the new platform's life, stayed on shelves for its entire run and still plays on its successor. The total also counts copies bundled with consoles and digital downloads, not just boxed games. Sales totals reward availability as much as quality, and a title on sale for a console's whole lifetime has an enormous structural advantage over one released late.
