How many pieces does each side start with in a game of chess?
Guess before you scroll — the answer is below
The answer
16 pieces
Each side starts with 16 pieces: 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 1 queen and 1 king. Pawns make up exactly half the army, which is why so much of early chess strategy is about which pawns to trade and which to keep as cover for the king.
How to get close to this number
Rebuild it from the board. The back rank holds eight pieces and the rank in front holds eight pawns, so each side starts with sixteen. Reconstructing from the physical setup takes a second and is more reliable than recall, and the board is right there to check against.
The composition point in the explanation is the strategically important one: pawns are exactly half the army. That ratio is why pawn structure dominates chess theory — half your material is the half that cannot retreat, so every pawn move is permanent and every pawn trade changes the shape of the position irreversibly.
The symmetry is worth noticing too. Both sides start identical, which makes chess one of the few competitive games with no asymmetry at all except the first move — and that single half-tempo advantage is measurable in results across millions of games. A perfectly symmetric starting position still produces a systematic edge.
