How many people are on Steam at the same time at peak?

How to get close to this number

Work down from the user base. The platform has well over a hundred million monthly active accounts, and concurrency for any service is a modest fraction of monthly actives — people play at different times, in different time zones, and not every day. A fraction in the tens of percent of monthly actives, at the single busiest moment, gives tens of millions.

The timing detail in the explanation is worth understanding rather than skipping: the record landed on a Sunday. Records cluster on weekends between the winter holidays and early spring, when the northern hemisphere spends its evenings indoors, the holidays have put new hardware and discounted games in people's hands, and weekend leisure across Europe overlaps with daytime in the Americas. A big new release can add the final push. Concurrency peaks are a fact about time zones and weather as much as about games.

Note that this counts users logged in, not users playing. The client runs in the background, so concurrency includes people with the storefront open and games idle. And the figure comes from a third-party tracker reading the platform's own public counter, which makes it well-sourced but still a measurement of one specific thing rather than of gaming in general.
