How many people work at Apple?

Technology medium Data from 2024

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In employees. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

164,000 employees

Roughly 164K.

Apple employs about 164,000 people directly, but over a million more work in its supply chain — Foxconn alone employs hundreds of thousands assembling Apple products. Apple designs and sells; it manufactures almost nothing itself.

How to get close to this number

Estimate from retail. The company runs hundreds of stores worldwide with dozens of staff each, which accounts for a large share of headcount on its own, and adds engineering, operations and corporate functions on top. Retail plus corporate for a company of this size gives a figure in the low hundreds of thousands.

The supply chain figure in the explanation is the one that changes the picture: over a million more people work making the products, at contract manufacturers the company does not own. Direct headcount measures who is employed, not who is working on the product, and for a company that designs and sells without manufacturing, those two numbers differ by a factor of seven.

That structure is the deliberate strategy rather than an accident. Outsourcing manufacturing moves capital costs, labour relations and cyclical risk off the balance sheet while keeping the design and the margin — which is why employee counts for modern hardware companies say very little about the scale of the operation behind their products.
