How many petaflops does the fastest supercomputer on the June 2026 TOP500 list run at?

Technology brutal Data from 2026

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In petaflops. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

2,198 petaflops

Roughly 2.2K.

China's LineShine topped the June 2026 TOP500 list at roughly 2,198 petaflops — 2.2 quintillion calculations per second. If every person on Earth did one calculation per second, it would take humanity more than eight years to do what it does in one.

How to get close to this number

Scale up from a machine you own. A modern laptop does something in the region of hundreds of billions of operations per second when it is working hard. A leading supercomputer is a warehouse of specialised processors wired together, so the honest question is how many orders of magnitude that warehouse buys you — and the answer is more than most people are willing to guess.

The barrier here is that the prefixes stop meaning anything. Mega, giga and tera are familiar from storage, but peta and beyond are not, and once a number passes the point where everyday units run out the mind simply flattens everything above it into "very large". The comparison in the explanation — the entire human population calculating for years to match one second — exists precisely to give that flattened region a shape.

What the figure measures is narrower than it sounds. Rankings are built on a specific benchmark, essentially solving a huge system of linear equations, and a machine can be tuned for it. Real scientific workloads usually achieve a fraction of the headline rate, and some of the largest systems in the world are never submitted at all. Treat it as the top of a published league table rather than as the fastest computing that exists.
