How many active Android devices are there worldwide?

Technology medium Data from 2023

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In devices. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

3,000,000,000 devices

Roughly 3B.

Google reports more than 3 billion active Android devices, which makes Android the most widely deployed operating system in history by a wide margin. Roughly seven in ten smartphones worldwide run it, though Apple takes the large majority of industry profit.

How to get close to this number

Work from the population. Most of the world now has a mobile phone, the great majority of phones are smartphones, and Android holds roughly seven in ten of them, as the explanation says. Take the global population, apply those fractions, and remember that many people carry more than one device. The answer has to be in the billions, and the only question is how many.

The trap is generalising from where you live. In several wealthy markets Apple holds a majority or close to it, so someone in the United States, the UK or Japan sees an Android share that is nothing like the global one. Almost every question about worldwide technology adoption punishes reasoning from a rich-country sample, and this is the clearest example of it.

Two caveats about the figure. "Active" is defined by the vendor — a device that has recently checked in with Google's services — which excludes the very large number of Android devices sold in markets where those services are not installed. And it counts devices rather than people, so tablets, older handsets kept as spares and work phones all add to it. It is a real number measuring a specific thing, not a headcount of users.
