In people. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

3,500,000,000 people

Roughly 3.5B.

Rice is the daily staple for about 3.5 billion people, more than any other single food. It provides roughly a fifth of all calories consumed by humans, and Asia grows and eats around 90% of it.

How to get close to this number

Start from where rice is the staple. Most of Asia eats it daily, and Asia holds around sixty percent of humanity — that alone gets you to several billion before adding the parts of Africa and Latin America where it is also a staple. Geography times population is the whole calculation.

The calorie figure in the explanation is the one that conveys its importance: roughly a fifth of all calories consumed by humans come from this one crop. Very few foods approach that share, and a crop that feeds a fifth of the species is a strategic commodity rather than an ingredient — which is why rice prices trigger political crises.

The concentration is the vulnerability. Around ninety percent is grown and eaten in one region, so production and consumption sit in the same place and there is relatively little international trade to buffer a bad harvest. A staple that is locally grown is resilient to shipping disruption and fragile to regional weather, which is the opposite trade-off from a globally traded crop.
