How many bananas are eaten worldwide each year?

Food hard Data from 2023

In bananas. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

100,000,000,000 bananas

Roughly 100B.

The world eats roughly 100 billion bananas a year, making it the most consumed fruit on Earth. Almost every banana sold internationally is a single clone variety, Cavendish, which is why one fungus is currently threatening the entire global supply.

How to get close to this number

Scale from yourself to the planet. Think about how many bananas you eat in a year, be generous about people in producing countries where they are a staple rather than a snack, and multiply by the world population. Even a low average per person, multiplied by billions, produces a total in the tens of billions — and the answer sits at the top of that band.

People undercount because they think of bananas as an imported supermarket item. In much of the tropics they are a staple crop eaten daily, including cooking varieties that never enter international trade, and that consumption dwarfs the export market most of us see. Global food totals are almost always dominated by domestic subsistence rather than by trade.

The monoculture point in the explanation is the one with consequences. Nearly all internationally traded bananas are a single clone, which means they are genetically identical and share every vulnerability — and a fungal disease is currently spreading through exactly that variety. This has happened before: the dominant export banana of the early twentieth century was wiped out by an earlier strain of the same disease and replaced by the current one.
