How to get close to this number

Reason from land and holding size. A country with hundreds of millions of hectares of farmland, held in units averaging a few hundred hectares, produces a farm count in the low millions. Total area divided by average holding size is the standard method, and it works for any country once you know roughly how consolidated its agriculture is.

The concentration in the explanation is the fact that reframes the count. A small minority of farms produces the large majority of output, while most of the rest are small operations whose owners earn their main income elsewhere. So a farm count is not a measure of agricultural capacity — the number of farms and the amount of farming have almost come apart.

The historical trajectory says the same thing from another angle: the count has fallen by roughly two thirds since the 1930s while production rose enormously. Mechanisation consolidated land into fewer, larger units. Any long-run count of businesses in an industrialising sector will fall while its output rises, and agriculture is the clearest example there is.
