How many bridges are there in the United States?

USA hard Data from 2023

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In bridges. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

620,000 bridges

Roughly 620K.

The National Bridge Inventory lists about 620,000 bridges. Roughly 42,000 of them are rated in poor condition, and the average American bridge is over 44 years old — most were designed for a 50-year service life.

How to get close to this number

Decompose by geography. A large country has millions of kilometres of road, and roads cross water, railways and other roads constantly — every one of those crossings is a bridge, and the overwhelming majority are short, unremarkable spans nobody notices. Estimating from road network length rather than from famous bridges is what gets you into the right range.

The trap is picturing landmarks. Suspension bridges over bays are what the word summons, and there are only a handful of those. The inventory is dominated by highway overpasses and small rural crossings, which is why the total runs into the hundreds of thousands. Whenever a count of infrastructure seems too large, the explanation is almost always that the category includes the mundane majority.

The condition figures in the explanation are the point of collecting this inventory at all. A large share is rated poor, and the average bridge has outlived the service life it was designed for — which turns a count into a maintenance liability. This is administrative data rather than an estimate: bridges are inspected and recorded on a defined cycle, which makes it one of the more solid figures on this site.
