The answer

3,972 emoji

Roughly 4K.

The Unicode Standard recommends 3,972 emoji as of Emoji 18.0, released in September 2026. That count includes every skin-tone, gender and flag variant built from combining simpler characters — the number of genuinely distinct base pictures is much smaller, closer to a few hundred.

How to get close to this number

The keyboard on your phone is the estimate. Scroll through it: several categories of a few hundred each — faces, people, animals, food, objects, symbols, flags. Adding those categories gets you into the low thousands, and the flags alone contribute a couple of hundred because there is one per country.

The explanation names the reason the number is so much larger than it feels: most of the count is variants. Skin tones, gender forms and combined sequences are each counted separately even though they are built from the same base picture, so the number of genuinely distinct images is a fraction of the total. A count depends entirely on whether a modified character is a new character.

It is also a moving figure with a formal process behind it. A standards body reviews proposals, and a new set is published roughly annually, so the total rises in steps rather than continuously. That process is why the count carries both a version number and a year, and why any figure without them is ambiguous.
