How many devices are connected to the internet?

Technology hard Data from 2024

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In devices. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

18,000,000,000 devices

Roughly 18B.

Roughly 18 billion devices are connected to the internet, more than twice the human population. Most are not phones or computers but sensors, meters, cameras and appliances quietly reporting data.

How to get close to this number

Stop counting people and start counting objects. Every person with a phone likely also has a laptop, a television, a watch and a speaker — but the real bulk is outside the home entirely: meters, sensors, industrial controllers and vehicle trackers. Once you include the invisible category, the count has to exceed the human population by a wide multiple.

The explanation names the misconception directly: most connected devices are not phones or computers. People estimate from the screens they own, and screens are a minority of the total. Any question about connected things is really a question about the infrastructure nobody sees, and estimating from consumer electronics will land far too low.

This is a soft figure and the source is an industry analyst rather than a registry — nobody can count connected devices directly, so totals are modelled from shipment data, network operator figures and sector surveys. Different analysts publish substantially different numbers using different definitions of "connected". Treat the order of magnitude as solid and the precision as an estimate.
