How much does the average Spanish household spend on food per month?
Guess before you scroll — the answer is below
The answer
$500
Spanish households spend around €500 a month on food, about €6,000 a year. Food inflation ran well ahead of general inflation in 2022-23, which is why the government temporarily cut VAT on staple products.
How to get close to this number
Work from people and per-person cost. A household averages a bit over two people, and feeding one adult at home costs somewhere around seven or eight euros a day. Multiply by people and by thirty days and you land in the hundreds of euros a month.
Note what the figure covers: food bought for the home, not eating out. In a country with the bar density described elsewhere on this site, a substantial share of food spending happens outside the household budget line, so the grocery figure understates total food expenditure considerably.
The inflation detail is the recent context: food prices rose well ahead of general inflation in 2022 and 2023, which is why the government temporarily cut value-added tax on staple products. Food is the most visible price in a household budget and the least avoidable, which is why it produces policy responses that other categories do not.
