How many websites exist on the internet?
Guess before you scroll — the answer is below
The answer
1,100,000,000 websites
Roughly 1.1B.
Netcraft counts over a billion hostnames, but only around 200 million are active sites with real content — the rest are parked domains and placeholders. The first website went live in 1991. The gap between "exists" and "is actually a website" is where most of the surprise in this number lives.
How to get close to this number
Anchor on registered domains. This site's companion question puts registrations at a few hundred million, and each domain can host many hostnames — so the hostname count exceeds the domain count by a wide multiple, landing around a billion.
The distinction in the explanation is where all the interest lives: a billion hostnames against roughly two hundred million active sites with real content. Four in five entries in the count are parked domains, placeholders and infrastructure hostnames that serve nothing a person would read.
That gap is the same shape as the domain, podcast and online-store questions on this site. Registration is nearly free and publishing is not, so any count of registered things vastly exceeds the count of maintained things. The interesting number is almost always the active subset, and it is almost never the one quoted.
