How many minutes long is a standard soccer (association football) match, not counting stoppage time?

In minutes. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

90 minutes

A standard match runs 90 minutes, split into two 45-minute halves. On top of that, the referee adds "stoppage time" at the end of each half to make up for time lost to injuries, substitutions and celebrations — which is why a "90-minute" match routinely runs several minutes longer in practice.

How to get close to this number

Everyone knows this one, which makes the interesting part the gap between the number and reality. The nominal figure is two halves of forty-five, but the clock never stops for injuries, substitutions or celebrations — so the stated duration and the elapsed duration are different quantities by design.

That design choice is unusual among major sports. Most stop the clock when play stops, which makes the nominal duration the real one; football instead runs the clock continuously and adds a discretionary allowance at the end. The result is that a match has no fixed length, and the referee decides when it ends.

That discretion has become contentious as stoppage time has lengthened. Governing bodies have pushed for fuller compensation of lost time, which has made added periods substantially longer than they used to be — so the gap between the nominal ninety and the actual duration is itself a moving number, even though the ninety has not changed since the nineteenth century.
