In articles. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

6,900,000 articles

Roughly 6.9M.

English Wikipedia holds about 6.9 million articles, written by volunteers with no payment. Printed as a paper encyclopedia it would run to roughly 3,000 volumes. Across all languages the total is over 60 million articles.

How to get close to this number

Think about coverage rather than effort. An encyclopedia that includes every settlement, every species, every professional athlete, every film and every asteroid needs millions of entries, because the world has millions of nameable things. Estimating from the breadth of what qualifies is far better than estimating from how many articles a volunteer community could plausibly write.

The comparison in the explanation makes the scale concrete: roughly three thousand printed volumes. A traditional encyclopedia ran to a couple of dozen, so this is two orders of magnitude larger — and it was produced without payment, which remains one of the genuinely surprising facts about the internet rather than a piece of trivia about it.

Note the distinction between an article count and a content count. Many entries are short stubs, automated geographic entries inflate some language editions substantially, and the multilingual total quoted is not a translation of the English one — different languages cover different things. Article counts measure entries, not knowledge, and the two diverge.
