How many domain names are registered worldwide?

Internet hard Data from 2024

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In domains. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

362,000,000 domains

Roughly 362M.

There are about 362 million registered domain names across all top-level domains. Roughly 160 million of them are .com. A large share are never used for a website at all — they are parked, defensive registrations or held for resale.

How to get close to this number

Scale from businesses and projects. Every company, organisation, side project and personal site needs at least one, many hold several defensively, and registration is cheap enough that speculators hold large portfolios. Tens of millions of businesses worldwide plus speculation and defensive holdings produces a total in the hundreds of millions.

The explanation supplies the correction most people need: a large share of registered domains point at nothing. They are parked, held for resale, or registered defensively by a brand that owns the misspellings of its own name. Registration count and website count are very different numbers, and the gap between them is enormous.

The composition is worth noting too. A single top-level domain holds a large minority of the total, decades after the introduction of hundreds of alternatives, which tells you how durable a default can be. These figures come from the operator of that domain, published quarterly, making it one of the better-instrumented statistics about the internet.
