How many countries are members of the United Nations?
Guess before you scroll — the answer is below
The answer
193 countries
The UN has 193 member states. South Sudan was the most recent to join, in 2011. The number is lower than most people guess because several places that feel like countries are not full members: Taiwan, Kosovo, and the Vatican sit outside, while Palestine and the Holy See hold permanent observer status.
How to get close to this number
Estimate from the continents. Africa has just over fifty, Europe around forty-five, Asia around fifty, the Americas around thirty-five, and Oceania a dozen or so. Adding those regional totals gets you very close, and it is far more reliable than trying to recall a single global figure.
The explanation names the reason people guess high: several places that function like countries are not members. Recognition, not existence, is the criterion — a territory can have a government, a currency and a football team and still sit outside, while others hold observer status rather than membership. "How many countries are there" and "how many UN members are there" are genuinely different questions.
The count is also nearly static now, which is unusual for this site. The last accession was over a decade ago, and the era of rapid membership growth through decolonisation ended in the twentieth century. A figure that changes once a decade is about as stable as a political statistic gets, which is exactly what makes it fair to ask.
