How many airports are there in the world?

World medium Data from 2024

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In airports. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

41,800 airports

Roughly 41.8K.

Counting every paved and unpaved runway, there are close to 42,000 airports worldwide. The United States alone has more than 13,000 of them, roughly a third of the global total, because so many are small private and municipal airstrips rather than commercial hubs.

How to get close to this number

The definition is the whole question, and noticing that is the skill. If "airport" meant places with scheduled passenger flights, the answer would be a few thousand. This count includes every runway, paved or not, which is a vastly larger category — most of them serve a handful of light aircraft and have no terminal at all. Whenever a count seems too large, check the definition before doubting the number.

The distribution is the surprising part. As the explanation says, a single country holds roughly a third of the world total, and it is not because it has a third of the air traffic. It is because general aviation is unusually widespread there: private strips, crop-dusting fields and municipal runways all count. Any global total dominated by one country is usually telling you about a definition, not about dominance.

This is also a figure that depends heavily on the source. Civil aviation bodies, national registries and intelligence factbooks all count differently, including or excluding heliports, military fields, seaplane bases and abandoned strips. The number here follows one widely cited compilation; another reputable source could reasonably publish something quite different without either being wrong.
