The answer

$33,000

Roughly $33K.

The Knot’s annual survey puts the average U.S. wedding at roughly $33,000, excluding the engagement ring and the honeymoon. The venue alone typically eats a third of that. Averages hide enormous spread: the median is lower, and the gap between Manhattan and rural Kansas is close to threefold.

How to get close to this number

Multiply guests by cost per head. A typical wedding has somewhere around a hundred guests, and catering, venue and drinks run to a couple of hundred dollars each. Guests times per-head cost plus fixed items gives a figure in the tens of thousands.

The venue share in the explanation is the largest single line: roughly a third of the total. Venue pricing is where the wedding industry's premium concentrates, because a venue can charge substantially more for the same room on the basis of the event being a wedding — which is the most-cited example of price discrimination by occasion.

The averages caveat is the important one: the median is lower than the mean, and the geographic spread approaches threefold. A small number of very expensive weddings pull the average up, so the typical wedding costs less than the reported figure — and quoting a mean for a right-skewed distribution is how this statistic sets expectations that most people cannot meet.
