How many feature films are released worldwide each year?

Movies & TV hard Data from 2023

Guess before you scroll — the answer is below

In films. Thousands: 1.000 · Decimals: 1,5 · Millions: 9m.

The answer

9,000 films

Roughly 9K.

Around 9,000 feature films are released globally each year. India makes the most of any country — roughly 1,500 to 2,000 — well ahead of the United States. Hollywood dominates revenue, not volume.

How to get close to this number

Count producing countries rather than studios. Dozens of countries have film industries, the largest produce well over a thousand features a year each, and many produce a few hundred. Summing across a few large producers and many small ones gives a global total in the thousands — and the question is global, not American.

The correction in the explanation is the important one: the largest producer by volume is not the one people name. India makes substantially more features than the United States, and Hollywood dominates revenue rather than output. Conflating commercial dominance with production volume is the single most common error in questions about the film industry.

Counting films is also harder than it sounds. What qualifies as a feature release depends on runtime thresholds, on whether a streaming-only release counts, and on national reporting standards that vary widely in completeness. The figure comes from a statistical agency compiling national submissions, which makes it the best available comparison and still an uneven one.
