The answer

24 categories

The Oscars had 24 competitive categories at the 98th Academy Awards in 2026, after Best Casting became the newest addition — the first brand-new competitive category since Best Animated Feature launched in 2001. A handful of additional honorary and special awards are given most years outside the competitive count.

How to get close to this number

Count the crafts. A film has direction, writing, acting, cinematography, editing, sound, design, music and effects, most of which get one award and acting getting four. Adding those up gets you to roughly two dozen, and reconstructing an award list from the disciplines that make a film is far more reliable than recall.

The useful contrast is with the Grammys, which this site also asks about: one ceremony has a couple of dozen categories and the other has around a hundred. The difference is that music splits by genre and film does not. Film awards separate by craft; music awards separate by genre and then by craft within it, which multiplies the total.

The list is nearly frozen, which is itself the interesting fact. As the explanation says, the most recent addition was the first brand-new competitive category in over two decades. Categories occasionally get renamed or retired, and honorary awards sit outside the competitive count entirely — so the figure describes a specific, deliberately stable list at a specific ceremony.
